Kendamil is manufactured in the town of Kendal, Cumbria by Kendal Nutricare.
Kendal Nutricare is a British family-owned business and manufacturer specialising in the production of world-class nutrition products from early life nutrition to adult formulations. The factory in Kendal has been manufacturing infant products for over 60 years but only came under ownership of the McMahon family in 2015. The average tenure of our staff is 20 years and our Research and Development Manager, responsible for formulating Kendamil, has been working in the facility for over 41 years.
Generally, legislation may be prescriptive on protein sources and compositional criteria.
However, it is a common misconception that all ingredients are the same. This is especially the case with Kendamil, in that we use milk fat as part of our fat source.
Kendamil uses whole milk fats in their recipe instead of relying solely on vegetable oils for several important reasons.
Firstly, the industry standard is to source 100% of the fat content in infant formula from vegetable oils, such as soybean, sunflower, or palm oil. However, Kendamil opts for mammalian milk fat, which has naturally occurring short and medium-chain fatty acids that are easier for infants to digest. These fatty acids are largely absent in most vegetable oils, with the exceptions of coconut and palm oil.
A significant component of mammalian milk fat is palmitic acid, a major saturated fatty acid. While vegetable oil blends typically rely on palm oil to deliver palmitic acid, the chemical structure of palmitic acid in palm oil differs from that in mammalian milk. Specifically, the positioning of palmitic acid on the glycerol backbone in palm oil makes it harder to digest. This structural difference can lead to the formation of calcium soaps in the gut, which are associated with harder stools, constipation, and even bone demineralization.
In contrast, infants consuming formula that includes milk fat experience fewer digestive issues, including reduced gut discomfort, crying, and fussiness. Additionally, their stools contain less hardening fatty soap content, which contributes to overall better digestive health.
Moreover, the milk fat used in Kendamil contains naturally occurring Milk Fat Globule Membrane (MFGM), a component absent in formulas relying solely on vegetable oils. Clinical studies have shown that MFGM plays a crucial role in infant development. It has been linked to improved neurodevelopment and language skills, as well as a reduction in episodes of diarrhoea, respiratory illnesses, and infections in general.

We have never used palm oil in our infant formula not only because we know it is detrimental to infants
We have never used palm oil in our infant formula not only because we know it is detrimental to infants but also to show our support for protecting rain forests, wildlife and indigenous communities. We also have never used fish oil in our infant formula, ensuring that our formula is vegetarian but also protecting depleted fish stocks.
